The tiny but mighty words! ๐
An article is a special word that comes before a noun. There are only three articles in English โ but they're used constantly!
indefinite
indefinite
definite โญ
๐ "a" ยท "an" ยท "the" โ only 3 ARTICLES in English!
For non-specific, general things
Use a or an when you're talking about any one of something โ not a specific one. It could be any dog, any apple, any idea!
For specific, known things
Use the when you're talking about a specific thing โ one that both the speaker and listener already know about!
Once upon a time, a little girl found a cat in her garden. The cat had a broken leg. She took the cat to a vet. The vet fixed the broken leg, and the cat was happy!
๐ก First mention = "a cat" (unknown). Second mention = "the cat" (now we know which one!)
The rule is about sound, not spelling! It's about what the next word sounds like.
...consonant sounds (b,c,d,f,g,h,j,k,l,m,n,p,q,r,s,t,v,w,x,y,z)
...vowel sounds (a,e,i,o,u sounds at the start)
Sometimes no article is needed! These are called "zero articles".
