๐Ÿ“– Definition

What is an Adverb?

Adverbs are like the detail-adders of language! They answer important questions:

โ“

How?

She sang beautifully.

โฐ

When?

He will arrive soon.

๐Ÿ“

Where?

The cat sat here.

๐Ÿ“Š

How much / often?

She is very kind. He always brushes his teeth.

๐Ÿ’ก The -ly Trick!

Many adverbs of manner end in -ly. If you can add -ly to an adjective, it often becomes an adverb!

quick โ†’ quickly
soft โ†’ softly
happy โ†’ happily
careful โ†’ carefully

โš ๏ธ Not all adverbs end in -ly!

fast ยท hard ยท well ยท late ยท early ยท here ยท there ยท now ยท soon ยท often ยท never ยท always

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ The Types

5 Types of Adverbs

The rabbit ran quickly past the sleeping fox.
๐Ÿ“

2. Adverb of Place

Tells us where something happens!

here ยท there ยท everywhere ยท nowhere ยท somewhere ยท inside ยท outside ยท above ยท below ยท near ยท far

Come inside! The dog is outside.
โฐ

She finished her homework already.
๐Ÿ”

Frequency scale: always (100%) โ†’ never (0%)
๐Ÿ“Š

5. Adverb of Degree

Tells us how much or to what extent. Usually modifies adjectives or other adverbs!

very ยท quite ยท extremely ยท rather ยท almost ยท too ยท enough ยท just ยท nearly ยท totally

The soup is very hot. He ran quite fast.

Where Does an Adverb Go? ๐Ÿค”

Adverbs are flexible โ€” they can go in different places in a sentence!

๐Ÿ“Œ At the Beginning

Quietly, she crept downstairs.

For emphasis or dramatic effect!

๐Ÿ“Œ In the Middle (most common)

She quietly crept downstairs.

Frequency adverbs usually go here (before main verb).

๐Ÿ“Œ At the End

She crept downstairs quietly.

Adverbs of manner, place, and time often go here.

๐ŸŒŸ Cool Adverb Facts!

๐ŸŽญ

Adjective or Adverb?

Some words are both! "Fast" can be an adjective (a fast car) or adverb (she runs fast). Context is key!

โš ๏ธ

Good vs. Well!

"Good" is an adjective. "Well" is its adverb. Say "She sings well" not "She sings good"!

๐Ÿ’ก

Double Adverbs!

You can stack them! "She spoke very quietly" โ€” here "very" (degree) modifies "quietly" (manner)!
